Globally, there are an estimated 258 million widows, with nearly 115 million living in extreme poverty.

In developing countries, where patriarchal systems dominate, the death of a husband often leads to a tragic chain of events for widows. They are stripped of their homes, their rights, and often left to fend for themselves without access to financial support or social protection. Many face discrimination, isolation, and abuse, with no safety net to rely on.

The Global Widow Crisis

In sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East, widows often find themselves cast out of their families and communities, blamed for their husband’s death, or subjected to cruel and outdated cultural practices. These women, who were once the cornerstone of their families, are now left to beg or rely on low-paying, menial jobs to survive.

In countries like Nigeria, where conflicts and insurgencies have left thousands of women widowed, the crisis is particularly severe. Widows in war-torn regions struggle not only with grief but also with the overwhelming responsibility of caring for their children without any form of income or government support. Many are unable to send their children to school, leading to a cycle of poverty that is difficult to escape.
