The Current Epidemic of Mpox
Understanding the Mpox Crisis
The world has been grappling with a new and significant health challenge—Mpox, also known as monkeypox. This viral disease, which is related to smallpox, has seen a resurgence in recent months, affecting communities worldwide. While the outbreak has primarily impacted certain regions, particularly in regions like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where the epidemic has had devastating effects, the threat it poses is global, and the need for awareness, prevention, and care has never been greater. The World Health Organization reports that the DRC has seen over 25,000 suspected cases and more than 500 deaths since the outbreak began. The spread of Mpox has been accelerated by factors such as inadequate healthcare infrastructure, limited access to vaccines, and ongoing conflict in the region. At Light and Hope Mission, we are committed to addressing this crisis with the urgency and compassion it demands.
What is Mpox?
Mpox is a rare but potentially serious viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus. Symptoms typically include fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that can spread across the body. While many cases are mild, the disease can be severe or even fatal, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. The virus spreads through close contact with an infected person or contaminated materials, making community transmission a significant concern.
The Global Impact
While the DRC is the most affected, other countries in Central and West Africa, Nigeria, and the Central African Republic of cases as well as sporadic cases in non-endemic regions, highlight the global reach of this epidemic. According to the latest report from the Congolese Ministry of Health published on August 15, since January, the country has recorded 15,664 potential cases and 548 deaths. The virus spreads through close contact, and without immediate intervention, the risk of a broader outbreak remains high.
Our Immediate Projects to Address the Mpox Epidemic
Recognizing the urgent need for action, Light and Hope Mission is prioritizing several immediate projects aimed at combating the spread of Mpox and supporting affected communities:
- Awareness Campaigns: We are launching educational programs to raise awareness about Mpox, its symptoms, and preventive measures, focusing on high-risk regions. Conducting community outreach programs to educate the public about the importance of hygiene, vaccination, and early detection of symptoms. Awareness campaigns are particularly crucial in regions like the DRC, where misinformation about Mpox is widespread.
- Support for Healthcare Facilities: We plan to collaborate with local healthcare providers to enhance their capacity to diagnose, treat, and manage Mpox cases effectively. This includes supplying medical equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), and essential medications. Ensuring that affected communities have access to necessary medical care, including vaccinations, antiviral treatments, and supportive care. In Nigeria alone, access to healthcare remains a challenge for over 60% of the population, emphasizing the need for intervention.
- Emergency Relief for Affected Families: Many families have been devastated by the loss of loved ones or the inability to work due to illness. We are initiating emergency relief programs to provide financial and material support to those impacted by the epidemic.
These projects represent our commitment to making an immediate and tangible difference in the fight against Mpox. While our work is just beginning, we are dedicated to bringing hope and healing to those affected by this crisis.
The Importance of Global Cooperation
The fight against Mpox and other epidemics cannot be won by a single organization or country. It requires a concerted global effort. Light and Hope Mission is committed to collaborating with other NGOs, governments, and international organizations to pool resources, share knowledge, and implement comprehensive strategies that can effectively address these health crises.

The Mpox epidemic is a complex and evolving crisis that requires sustained effort and vigilance. As the situation develops, we are continually adapting our strategies to ensure that we can respond effectively to new challenges.
